A sunset signals the ending of another day. Sometimes the day was glorious, sunny and warm and we wish for it never to end. Sometimes the day was cold, gloomy and full of sorrow and we cannot wait for the sun to set. As the reds, yellows and purples swirl together in layers surrounding the last golden glow of the day, we reflect to see if we made a difference this day. Did we add to someone’s joy? Did we tell those closest to us how we feel? Are we a day closer to our goals or have we made choices that have moved them further away? Sometimes we are able to paint our life’s journey; sometimes the brush strokes are not ones we would choose. How does your canvas look? Who added to your canvas?
If this was your last sunset, can you honestly say you made the most of this day? Did you put off important things for ‘tomorrow’? Fog and clouds may obscure our view but we can always count on the sun setting. Just as each day ends with a sunset, each year ends with December 31st. 2014 is setting tonight. How does your sunset look? Are you looking forward to the sunrise of 2015?
The beauty of a sunset is followed by the glory of a sunrise and another chance to make a difference. A sunrise comes even if you are not ready for it – too early – too late – but it will come. Sunrises are spectacular in color and promise and hope! Yes, hope comes with the sunrise. Regardless of what happened the day or year before, a sunrise brings light to new opportunities or attitudes or relationships.
As one sits with a steaming hot cup of coffee on a cool morning, wrapped in a warm fleece blanket as the first pale light becomes visible, one can feel a sense of contentment. Another sunrise bring another chance to laugh and love and create. As the colors in the sky deepen, one sees a red fiery glow start to show on the horizon. As the ball of fire rises higher and higher, birds, loons and geese erupt into song welcoming the day. They do this every day! One cannot help but smile, sit back, and enjoy the moment the Creator gives us each day.
With the setting of 2014, there is now a sunrise of 2015! There is a new canvas to put up, new paints to choose and new pictures to paint.
I wish for you many warm and colorful sunsets that satisfy your senses, your mind and your heart. AND many sunrises that give you hope and excitement for making the most of the new day! May you look fondly back at the moments of 2014 and may you look expectedly, filled with an awe and wonder of what may be in store in 2015!
Happy New Year!
